Farmhouse Bar Stools ~ The Easy Way

I might just be a little bit giddy. I might just be a little bit over-the moon. Why? Because we are finally back at our kitchen remodel that we started in January of 2016…yes, almost 2 years ago!! If you follow me on social media, you’ve seen our trials, but the best place to catch up is here. Today, is Furniture Fixer Uppers day, and my dated stools are about to become farmhouse bar stools. See the end of the post for more fun from my friends!

Remodeling Stress ~ How to Cope During DIY Projects

Numerous shows are on television demonstrating how “easy” it can be to take a home and turn it into something fabulous. Knock out a wall (or two), put down new flooring, and even add-on…all in one episode. It all seems so glorious and begs you to give DIY a try, doesn’t it? Somehow though, it doesn’t quite prepare you for real life DIY and the reality of remodeling stress. Yep, I’m talking about that smack-in-the-face kind of “What is going on?” feeling. To aid in that journey to get that euphoric accomplishment feeling, I am going to share 5 ways to prepare and cope during your remodel.

Mudroom Makeover ~ Budget-Friendly Improvements

Do you ever leave a project unfinished and it irks you that you never got it done? That’s me, at least when it comes to our mudroom. A few years ago I remodeled that space, but injured myself while doing so. I got done as much as I could and then stopped, planning to get back at it. Well, babies and life happen and time slips away. So…today I’m getting back in there and doing a mudroom makeover. Plus, we have two winners for last week’s giveaway AND kicking off a new giveaway today. Yay!!

First, let’s take a look at this project. This was our mudroom in the true before.

Refresh Old Wood Easily (Faux Wood Garage Door Update)

It was almost exactly 3 years ago that I decided to do something drastic. My husband and I took on the exterior of our home in DIY form as we are known to do. He tackled the stone veneer on the front, while I took care of painting the entire house top to bottom (yep, all by my lonesome self). I decided to take our builder grade garage door to a new level and give it a faux wood look. Many have asked, “How has it held up?” So today I’m going to show you the 3 year anniversary reveal, plus give you a few tips on how to refresh old wood with my latest treasure.

If you haven’t read about our garage door makeover, you really should head HERE to not only see it in full, but I also share the steps of how I achieved it so you can too. Here it is in summation:

Boring before, but oh-so-good after, isn’t it?

Well, I won’t keep you in suspense any longer. Here it is 3 years to the day since I first worked on my garage door

Corn Husk Pumpkins & Wreath ~ Fireplace Makeover

I’m BAAACK!! In case you didn’t know, I took a blogging break last week to get our homeschooling year off to a good start and get caught up on a few things. That break resulted in our entire family getting a nasty chest cold and myself ending up with a broken toe. So did I get much done? Nope, but we did manage to get our barn wood for our kitchen counters. I share more details in my newsletters, so be sure to sign up. And… there’s  more good news! Today is Trash to Treasure Tuesday and I’m all about some corn husk. I know I’m corny. hee hee hee

Be sure to check out the bottom of the post for what my blogger friends have worked on for you too!

So many people are starting to decorate their homes for the coming fall season and though I hang onto every thread of summer, I decided to go ahead and get some crafting done. I wanted to give you a chance to get some of your own fall decor made before you’re ready to decorate.

Here’s what’s funny…I had no intention to take on my fireplace as a project right now since our family room is next on our agenda. I keep telling myself, “Stay focused…kitchen!” However, when I got it all taken apart here’s what I saw:

One blank boring mess. We will be tearing out that carpet and redoing a few things, but my future goal was to freshen up this fireplace when the remodeling was done. Well…my little self saw fit to tackle it now because…I WANTED TO. (laughs wickedly)

Faux Crate Drawers ~ Farmhouse Kitchen Update

You guys!! My family and I have been working so hard in our kitchen remodel while trying to keep up with life. (It happens, ya know.) I’m very excited to share with you the latest that we’ve been working on. For today’s post, I’ve had this project in my brain since FOREVER, and to see it finally come to fruition is wonderful. I’m going to show you how I took our boring builder grade kitchen drawers and turned them into faux crate drawers.

For those of you just joining in, I invite you to check out where we started from HERE, and then our last update HERE.

So…my email subscribers got to see this first, but here is how our ceiling looks now. *if you want to be in on the know, sign up for my newsletters either sign up in the sidebar on computer, or at the bottom of the page on mobile.

Farmhouse Beadboard Coffered Ceiling in Kitchen by Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

We love how much more bright and light our kitchen is without the faux beams we had originally. We’ve added recessed lighting to our kitchen, and new fixtures to our laundry, as well as updated our hot wiring mess.

Whomever wired this house is, well…scary! Our panel is a mish-mosh of connections that don’t make sense and my husband has spent his last four weekends in our attic roasting like a turkey fixing it all. That whole thing has eaten up our precious time, but we want to make it right. He even found a live wire just sitting up there – ask him how he knows. ahem.

While he’s doing that, I’ve been up to some repurposed fun. Enter in my kitchen drawers…

DIY Farmhouse Lighting ~ Kitchen Remodel Continues

Our kitchen remodel is going strong despite some setbacks that have been happening in our family, like continued mandatory overtime for my husband and our car breaking down (we are our own mechanics). We even had to say goodbye to my husband’s grandmother. No worries though, we are at peace with everything as God has richly blessed us, but it has certainly slowed us down. Such is life, right? So, I’d like to show you what I have been able to get done. My DIY farmhouse lighting!!

Upcycled Wooden Farmhouse Clamp as Wall Sconce by Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

First, to catch you up to speed, I suggest you check out where we started, our flooring reveal and window treatments. So much goodness going on! I am super-excited to show you how I took these antique wooden clamps and turned them into sconces in our dining area. And I even made some funky industrial style DIY farmhouse lighting above our kitchen table. Nothing like a good repurpose to get your blood pumping.

I spied a large assortment of these antique clamps at a flea market and snatched up a handful of them. These are the two smallest and I also have three large ones. My brain was reeling with ideas when I saw them, but when the lightbulb went off (get it? what a pun!) to use them in our remodel, I was so stoked.

Storage Bins from Repurposed Kitchen Cabinets

Anyone here love storage bins like I do? We are in the middle of our kitchen remodel and a few weeks ago I showed you what I did with a few of the cabinets I had pulled out, like this flower trough…

I promised that I would show you what I would do with the rest of my junk stash, and this shelf that flanked my sink area is next on the hit list. It looks to me like storage bins. Do you see it?

Budget Window Treatments & Kitchen Update

Y’all have been so patiently waiting for my kitchen update and today’s the day! We started a month and a half ago and have been working harder than ever before to get this project done, but as with everything DIY, there are hang-ups that happen. I’m so excited to share my husband’s hard work on our gorgeous floor and a secret to getting budget window treatments for your home. Yay!

To catch some of you up to speed, you can read all about the start of our kitchen remodel HERE, and this is our starting point when we bought our home in 2003.

This is where we left off before starting our latest remodel…

…with our old vinyl floors…

Worn Out Vinyl Flooring by Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

When we bought the home, the dining area had been converted from a screened in porch and we took out a wall to the two rooms could flow. With that there was a transition in the floors that was not very good, and there were 4 different layers of old flooring to deal with.

We had to build up the one floor to match the plane of the other and that was no easy task because it also had another three transitions into our laundry area. What a chore!
