Spur of the moment ideas can be the most fun. Don’t you agree? If you’ve been following me with my Life Updates, you’ll know I’ve been making changes in more ways than one. Some are necessary in the obvious ways, but others are necessary in another form. That’s where you’ll find me in my bedroom makeover with a last-minute DIY painted rug.
This photo above is where I started for today’s project. However, this is where it started a few months ago…
So, as you can see, I’ve done much work since the first bedroom remodel and am wanting to finish it up. That’s where today’s project comes in.
WHY PAINT?
First, I share in my past posts what state the floor is in, you can see the wear in the photo above and also below.
In addition, you can also see bits of tape I place on the floor to mark where my faux rug is going. To show you in vlog form what I create, see the video below.
As you can see, I tried to make repairs and explain in my video of why I’m at this point. However, instead of just letting it go and making my eye twitch, I am going to make it suit me. And, of course, I have the perfect helpers.
If you want to try this too, it’s pretty straightforward:
- prep is key – sand and clean to get the floor ready for having “tooth” to accept the layers
- use a good primer such as Zinsser BIN that I use in all these past posts
- apply your base coat using a micro foam roller allowing to cure per manufacturer instructions and add coats add needed
- create and apply your design, allowing to cure
- apply topcoat – I mention in the vlog I’m using the same poly as when the floor is refinished. Or Waterlox or any other finish you prefer.
- enjoy!
DESIGN
While I have always adored a checkerboard or harlequin floor, I didn’t want to cover the entire floor, just the damage. In taking in consideration of the style I’m after, the size of the room and what I aim to present, I settle on simple. The room already has loads of lines with the walls and ceilings. Using this template, I made to sew my custom pillows for my online store, I create the checkerboard beginning in the center.
Not only can you trace a shape like I did, but you could also tape it off. That’s not my preference when doing a job like this, so I hand paint.
Then, once I have my design as I like, I add two topcoats and let cure. The best part of this entire process is you can with it whatever you like. The sky’s the limit!
FINISHING
Last, I can say the room is complete and it’s time for me to take the next steps to move in from my two-year stay in the closet. This is not easy as I mention in my vlog.
However, the floor just perfect and I’m smitten. In my vlog you can see what Loula thinks… tee hee.
SHARE
Now I’m curious, have you ever attempted something like a DIY painted rug? Let me hear it in comments below. Likewise, pin and share to inspire others to try too.

This looks great, how fun!
Thanks! I’m lovin’ how it brightens up the space and gives it a new feel.
Exciting!! The colors blend well and it livens up the room nicely. It is a lot of work to rent sanders and stain if you could refinish it again. But; you are eating the elephant one bite at a time and we all anticipate the end. How sweet is precious Lula supervising your work!!
One time I painted a muted lime green in my livingroom with a white Moroccan trellis stencil and white boarder. I hated it and so did hubby. We have lvp now and ……I hate it as well. 😞 I dislike anything that is fake but I can not afford my desired white oak.
Yes! And yes, it is. I want to do my other floors if I stay, and it should be easy as they are so worn. Loula is a hoot! And such a treat too. 😀 I totally understand about wanting real and not fake. One day!
