Heart Cut-Out Furniture Upcycled

When the second Tuesday of the month rolls around, I am so eager to share with you not only what I have up my sleeve, but also what my blogger friends have cooked up for you too. eep! It’s so fun for us to share a vision for a cast-off or misfit with the goal to inspire for our Trash to Treasure Tuesday. Take a peek at this dynamic duo. ahem. They’re…umm…vintage alright. And, they have hearts…lots of ’em. Time for heart cut-out furniture upcycled into new!

Pine Novelty Chairs Before Makeover | prodigalpieces.com

Okay, so in the same era we have oodles of geese, (see my thoughts about them HERE) and then we have HEARTS…everywhere. Nothing against hearts, but does everything made of pine have to have them? meh. Typically, I either make them vanish as seen HERE with this quirky lot. Likewise, I embrace them also seen HERE with this quilt rack.

Today, I’m doing both. Also, what’s with setting these around the house with dolls in them? haha. (yes, I’m talking to you, Mom. mwah.) No offense to any of you that do, we all have our quirks…trust me I have mine…like trash used in my decor. {{wink, wink}}

TIME TO BREAK UP

As I’ve mentioned before, if it’s made of wood, it has potential. Do you see it? First, it’s time to take these pieces apart and see what we can do with them. This is the therapeutic part without a doubt.

Heart Cut-Out Furniture Upcycle Pieces to Start | Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

Looks like a whole lotta DIY fun to me! To begin, I choose the sides of the doll highgchair and the spreader from the back and the curvy steps. Then, I use the side to trace a heart onto the spreader and cut two hearts with my jigsaw to fill those spots.

Not only did I add wood filler, but also a scrap piece of luan (thin plywood) to the back for added design. Can you see where I’m headed with this?

Here’s my first heart cut-out furniture upcycle in duo. One pointing to the left…

…and also one pointing to the right. woot! Even better is that Tin Lizzy embroidery I found in my neighbor’s trash in this post. Can you imagine tossing that?!?

PROJECT TWO

Next, it’s time for the other two sides of the smaller chair. Do they spark any ideas with you?

First, do note that the back sides have routed passes in them for the seat and back. So, I cut off the side of the seat and back and fill in the those routed spots. Then, I basically fill in with what my imagination saw. Ta da!

I mean, who doesn’t love cute cuddles? I’m a hugger and this is all I could see in those pieces once I lay eyes on them. I’m curious…inspired yet?

PROJECT THREE

Well, if you’ve not been bitten by the DIY bug yet, check out this next project. If you recall, I have the back and seat from this smaller chair, but also the seat from the highchair left to make use of. Hmmm…

DIY Farmhouse Riser Stool Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

After a fun run with my miter saw and jigsaw, I come up with these pieces to work with.

Did you envision a super cute riser stool? I did! haha. These are fun to build and perfect for any spot in your home.

LAST, BUT NOT LEAST

Finally, because I’m a sucker for no waste, I have to do something with this last part of the highchair. It’s the back and has that heart, so the question is…do I embrace or erase? However, since I’m feeling the love, I say embrace and have fun!

Yes, call me a nut, but this is what I saw. All I need to do is sketch my vision and fill it in.

In addition to ridding the planet of those funky pine chairs, I’ve created four different project with only very minimal scrap waste which instantly went into my wood stove. BAM! Now, I know this begs the question…which one is your favorite? Also, what would you have done with the wood? I’d love to hear!

  8. Niki says

Amazing! These old doll chairs wouldn’t even catch my eye. I’m not a fan of the heavy pine with heart cut out- anything. I am blown away by all you managed to get out of what looked like so little to work with. Very cool and sweet Larissa!

  9. Jill Smith says

Absolutely LOVE seeing how you transform the boring into beautiful!! Your creativity is so inspiring…. I often go out to my stash of odds and ends, and think “how would Larissa change this?” ?
I loved the “Enter” signs!! Those turned out awesome!

    • Larissa says

Jill, you are so much fun! I love the smiles I get from you guys. Thank you!

  10. Janelle says

Your brain amazes me! How you saw those fingers so cool !

    • Larissa says

I’m glad I don’t scare you! haha! Thank you, Janelle.

    • Larissa says

It’s such fun. Yes, couldn’t let that go to waste! One of my favorite finds for sure.

  11. Rebecca - NC says

So unbelievably creative and well executed!!!! I love them all, but I’m a sucker for a foot stool!!!! ??

    • Larissa says

bwahahaha! Win the sucker for taking on too much award, right? 😀 Thanks, Nancy.

  12. Rose says

I think I’m pretty clever with my recycles but you are above and beyond! Way to go!

    • Larissa says

Just doing it is half the fun, right? Thanks, Rose. 😀

  13. Christy James says

You are the most creative ever!! Clearly, the stool is my favorite because I just bought it lol! Will be super cute for staging! But I love the vision you had for the other pieces as well! I was just checking out at the thrift store yesterday when they brought five handmade wooden crates to the floor near the checkout. Do I need five wooden crates? No, but for $3.75 each, I knew I could use the wood ha ha! XOXO

    • Larissa says

Girl, you made my day!! Thank you. As for the crates, you would’ve had to wrestle me for them. tee hee!

  14. Naomi Shelton says

Larissa, hands down, it’s the flamingos that take the prize in my book! I would never haver thought of all the ways you got rid of those pesky hearts! Great makeover, girl!

    • Larissa says

Sweet! They are such beautiful creatures, and I love how in nature they make hearts when greeting. Thanks so much, Naomi. 😀

  15. Anne says

My favorite is the little bench!! ?

    • Larissa says

Yay! Thanks, Anne. I’m such a sucker for benches and stools.

  16. Trudy says

Mind blown! You are definitely and out of the box thinker! I am curious as to how you made the legs angled on the stool. When I look at your cut pieces they look like 90 degree cuts, did you angle all those cuts to make it stable?

    • Larissa says

tee hee! You made me smile from ear to ear, Trudy. Thanks! I used my miter saw on a 15 degree angle for the legs and the spreader.

  17. Marietta says

Larissa; You astound me, I cannot believe how you created those projects out of what you started with . BTW, not overly fond of “EVERY” pine peice having a heart cut out either.

    • Larissa says

haha. Yeah, I don’t mind hearts in limited amounts on appropriate things, but these are overkill. 🙂 I’m so glad you had fun joining me on my DIY adventure, Marietta!

  18. Marie B. says

Wow, talk about amazingly creative imagination, Larissa, these are fabulous! They are all fabulous ideas but the hugging dinos are just too stinking ADORABLE.

    • Larissa says

I hope you can see how much fun I had, Marie. Thank you!!

  19. P Page says

OMG! Sooooo creative – wow. And I obviously have no creativity or imagination. I hate to admit this but i couldn’t fathom why there were flamingo comments until I looked back at that – LOL – FUNNY KINDA ABSTRACT MONKEY! Seriously, I saw hair, eyes, nose and a BIG heart shaped mouth. Must say the flamingos are just too cute!!

  20. Olga Kosynska says

Love all of the upcycled pieces, but those 2 hands are my 100% favorite!
    Fantastic idea!

    • Larissa says

Yay!! That’s so fun for me to hear, Olga. Thank you for the smile! 😀
