One of the classic pieces used in farmhouse style is the wooden cutting boards, particularly antique ones. However, modern day style cutting boards still get used and wore out, but maybe aren’t quite in a good state to use in your decor. Today, I’d like to show how I gave these repurposed cutting boards a whole new lease on life. Let’s get our DIY on, shall we? {{high five}}
As I mentioned earlier this week in my doll cradle post, wooden items at the thrift store or garage sales are always some of the first things I peruse. It’s a veritable potluck of potential. First, let’s start with this small one you see above.
DIY TIME
It was broken and very worn, but…made of wood, so the sky’s the limit. I sketched on an outline of a cow and used my jigsaw to cut it out.
My stash always holds fun reclaimed boards of various styles and age. It makes what I do fun! It just so happens I found the perfect piece of oak barn siding to help me create the rustic farmhouse sign I had envisioned.
COW FUN
Since the cow shape didn’t use up all the wood, I decided to make a few toys for my three youngest. One of my favorite things to do as a mom is to make handmade goodies for my crew of 6 and surprise them with them in the morning at their seat at the table. Out of my scrap I made a turtle, mouse, and snake with beaded eyes. They love their little surprises!
FIRST REVEAL
As for the sign, I created my text on the computer and then used my transfer method to put it on the reclaimed wood. Nothing better than farm fresh milk, right?
We do get our milk straight from the cow weekly and is one of our favorite treats. You can beat the fresh cream and the ice cream we make from it. Yummy!
My sign has the rustic farmhouse style I love with a bit of whimsy. By simply using my nailer to tack on the repurposed cutting board and adding hand-painted text, plus a hanger on the back, it now has a whole new life.
SECOND BOARD
Time for the second, larger cutting board. woot! This one was a solid piece that still had much life in it. First order of business was to sand it down with my Corner Cat. I love how this little sander is portable, but also helps me get into the tightest of spaces.
After sanding it done, I decided to take this board to a new level. Digging into my stash once again led me to find a set of four remnant drawer knobs. I used my spray paint to give them a few coats of a Satin Black.
While the spray paint was curing, I set about to add some whimsy to this board too. These repurposed cutting boards are getting the new life I was after. tee hee! Again, using my transfer method, I was able to easily get my text on with my paint brush.
My text cured and then I added a few topcoats of a poly to seal it all in. Next, I added the feet and a couple of pulls to the side to create this fun farmhouse style serving tray.
MORE CUTTING BOARDS
It has function and charm, and makes for a great multipurpose addition to kitchen decor. Use it to corral your daily grind goodies, or to serve up your guests in style. It even works as a fun centerpiece or art leaning on your backsplash.
The added knob feet give it a lift and make it nice for layering too.
So…I have to ask…which of these two repurposed cutting boards is your favorite project? I had fun with both of them and hope you are inspired to give your old boards a second look or even snag some on your next junkin’ adventure.

Since last week when you showed them boards, I couldn’t wait to see what you had done to them..
I have an obsession with bread boards, as they are the first thing I look for when I go to thrift stores.
Love your bread boards as they are like no udder. Using up all the scrap of wood; I Also like the cute little toys that you sawed out for your kids; something new and fun to play with.
