Are you ready for this? In my last post, which was Trash to Treasure Tuesday, I initiated an upcycle of this thrifted goose planter. While the body became a sweet woodland playset, there’s still more to the story. With that in mind, I’m keeping my promise to make use of the poor goose head and heart. haha. How about he becomes a shabby chic goose instead?
If you recall, with the removal of one single screw, the goose head is off and ready for reprieve. However, I initially am inclined to toss him in my fireplace along with the heart. {{gasp}}
Because I have a junker’s heart for #trashure, I just couldn’t do it. His wee wittle eyes were begging me to save him and let him become royalty. Much like his larger goose friend I upcycled into a swan HERE or a broken swan planter as seen HERE. So, ya know I have to give him some shabby chic lovin’.
BUILDING TIME
First, I head out to my wood stash and grab a piece of 1″ x 8″ board after creating a body for my goosey guy on a piece of paper.
Then, after I trace the body onto the board, I use my jigsaw to cut it out. Also, I make feet out of scrap luan and legs out of scrap dowel I have on hand. Don’t you just LOVE a good stash?!
Next, I use dowel pins I cut and drill holes into the body and the goose neck to make a solid joint. After that, I dry-fit it all together. Isn’t he cuuuuute?
In order to get this DIY party started, I use a flat black spray paint to make the base color all cohesive.
SHABB’N IT UP
As soon as the black paint cures, I start on the layering process using a flat white latex paint to give the goose a light coat. In addition, notice I have the pieces removed from the base to make this process easier.
Then, I take off the feet and wrap them in brown floral tape. Not only does this add texture to my creation, but also a lovely dark color.
Next, I create a design template on my computer in a harlequin pattern to use my transfer method to decorate the base.
Last, but not least, I dig into my vintage trimmings stash and pull out laces and handmade crochet trims to give my goosey guy even more texture and style. So fun!!
MEET MY CROWNED GOOSE
Finally, after my totally fun DIY stent, here’s my shabby chic goose is dressed up and ready to go. Isn’t he so handsome?
Not only is he stylin’ from head to toe, but he’s also just so cute and saved from the fiery death of my fireplace. tee hee! What shall we name him…George…William…Fredrick?
I don’t know about you, but his little web feet have my heart! In addition, if you look closely, you can see I also wrapped his beak in that brown floral tape.
In either event, I’m simply glad to have the ability to create AND share my passion with you. Are you having fun, yet?
With that in mind…what happened to that wooden heart? Well, it needed an update as well. Here’s my mini makeover to spare it from the fireplace as well.
