When it comes to getting crafty, for me there’s no holds barred. It’s not only fun but makes for a great adventure when I can dig into my stash and get creative. Today, I’m taking an upcycled egg carton and using it to dress up this thrifted box.
I’ll be honest, but this mainly caught my eye for two reasons (1) it’s wood (2) it’s sad. While I appreciate that someone painted and decoupaged this, it just doesn’t suit me, and I love that it suited someone else.
With that, let’s have some fun with my collection of egg cartons. Do you upcycle them?
It goes without saying that in my household, we consume eggs on a daily basis. However, I do purchase them from local farmers as well as local stores with the focus of paperboard cartons so as not to add to pollution by adding the Styrofoam cartons in our landfills.
I typically save them to use for starting seed for my garden or save them for local farmers. Additionally, I used them in my compost as well as fire starters if need be. Likewise, I’ve even torn and ground them up to make a paste for various projects. Can you see the possibilities with these upcycled egg cartons?
CREATING TIME
For the sake of making this tutorial simple to understand, I’m sharing my video tutorial below along with the step-by-step tutorial outlined below in text form.
Want to try this on your own? Follow the simple steps below.
STEP 1
First, for my mini makeover, I want to get it down to bare bones. In order to do that, I remove the decoupage and sand down.
STEP 2
Once the box is ready, I use these egg cartons and cut them into pieces focusing on the center “cones”.
My goal is to create four feet for my box. Then, I take three of the cones, stack them inside each other and then glue them together to make a set of four feet.
Also, here’s a flower my youngest made with those same pieces cut and glued in a different fashion. See how versatile this medium is to use?
STEP 3
Next, I glue the feet onto the bottom of the box. What’s great about this is I’m always adding feet to different projects, like trays and more. SEE HERE.
STEP 4
Before I move on to the next step, I want to give this entire piece a couple of coats of paint. It’s at this point you can take your creation in any direction you want – paint, decoupage, stencil, texturize… you get the idea.
STEP 5
Last, but not least, I want to add a natural element, so I take my roll of veneer edging and cut pieces to add to the box. The video shows how to do this best. In addition, you can see how I use this veneer to band edges of plywood for various uses HERE.
NEXT LEVEL
Finally, here’s my thrifted box with upcycled egg carton feel dressed up and ready to go.
Not only is this box versatile for any room of the home but also can be used to store whatever your heart desires.

Yes! I up cycle by using them as stones and bricks on dollhouses. Always a fun, but time consuming project.
Sweet! I have built dollhouses for my daughters and make all the mini stuff too. It’s addictive!

This box is now amazing.
Your daughters flower is so creative and so pretty 🙂
Maybe she could do a video of her project. That would be so fun to see.
Thanks for sharing.
I do upcycle egg cartons too. I love the feel of them.
haha. A crafty nut like me! 😀 Thank you for the love. She actually followed another video tutorial to make it. Kept her busy for a time and made for sweet smiles. They do feel great!
Cute little box, it looks a lot better., and the feet are ingenious. We save our cartons for area people who have their own chickens. I don’t usually use them for crafts.
Thanks! I do the same and sometimes no one wants them, especially during winter when hens don’t lay much. Most around here use them to start seedlings like I do.
