Hormonal weather! I tell ya, first we thought spring was normal. Then, it went all summer on us for over a week. Now, we’re back to frosts and freezes and woolly socks. I’m ready for sandals! Anyhoo, it’s high time I give my stoop a refresh and update planters with some paint. Don’t ya think?
Back about 4 years ago I wanted to add curb appeal to our front stoop. I wanted a custom build because the urns I had there were a bit too dressy for my rustic vibe. So, I created these “X” planters and share the FREE step-by-step build plans with you. Now, after that time in full sun and snow all summer and winter, they are looking a little…er…tired. Here’s the original stain finish with our old red door before and my video demonstrating the finish below.

Like I mentioned, the goal to update planters is pretty simple. They’re not too far gone and I want to keep them that way. I just need to tighten things up and refresh them. This time around, however, I’ll be using paint. If you look up in the before photo, you see we recently replaced our front door. Then, I darkened the stain on my flower boxes we built. So, you know what’s coming, right? DIY domino effect e’ry time.
Since I wanted this project done pretty fast, I whip out my Medium Spray Shelter and my Quick Finish Sprayer. Last summer I changed the rest of my exterior door colors on the rest of the house to match my shed door. I love that blue! It’s called Superstitious.
You can see our demo and remodel in this post. This transformation is like night and day! In order to bring that color to the front, I’m painting the planters this lovely color.
SETUP & SPRAY
You know I love my HomeRight sprayers. I have a few of the models for different reasons. This Quick Finish Sprayer is perfect for just that…a quick finish. It suits your smaller projects, is easy to setup, and super fast to clean. I fill up the canister thinning the paint per manufacturer instructions, Then, before starting my project, I adjust the flow on a piece of cardboard.
First, I apply one coat and let it cure. After that, a second coat and I’m done. Literally each coat take 10 minutes, and two cleanups 10 minutes. What could be easier than that? Now, it’s time for my greenhouse therapy. I just love going to the nursery! Hard to not come home with a truck full. Am I right?
Finally, my efforts to update planters is complete. It was an easy job and I’m so pleased with the results.
Now, I have that blue color tied into the front of my home and filled with my favorite coral color flowers. What’s your favorite accent color in your garden?
I don’t know about you, but I really love planting. However, the best part is seeing the fill in over the summer months. I want them full right away! haha! I still need to add my vines to my window boxes, but that will come soon. It’s all part of the fun for sure.
As always, my goal is to inspire you. Whether you build your own, buy, or upcycle, they’re all part of your own home story. Making your house your home is one of the greatest adventures. Enjoy it to the full.

I have been working on refreshing my front porch this spring. I purchased some new furniture and outdoor rug, all in blue shades. These planters would be the icing on the cake. The Wagner sprayer would be perfect for so many projects. I spray painted a couple of chairs and my fingers and hand were totally numb afterwards! Thanks for all of your giveaways. You always do such good work.
Fun! I hear ya on the fingers! haha. Yes, you’ll love this HomeRight sprayer. Thanks for the love!
Planters look great..love the blue
Thank you, Cathy.
So sorry about you fb page…..that really stinks! I love your projects.
Thank you. I’m trusting God in this.

I love how the front of your house looks. That new door of yours is amazing. When did you get the door? My husband and I need a new door on our house and we are going to get one this spring/summer. I want a door exactly like yours, it is what I have been wanting. Love the color you put on the planters. I will need to win this sprayer because once we get a new door all my shutters will need to be repainted and that would make it so much easier!! Thanks for having the contest!
Thank you. Many years in the works, but worth it. We got it at Home Depot. My pleasure to share!
The blue adds such a lovely dimension and interest to the front of the house! And hormonal is the perfect way to describe our current Spring weather too. Sandals one day, footed zipped pajamas the next… it’s a yo-yo!
haha!! That’s exactly how I say it…yo-yo! Thank you for the love on my home. Getting there!

Love them planters. They really gives visitors that warm Welcome feeling.
Thank you for this great giveaway opportunity.
Enjoy your day
Thank you, Colleen. I’d love to add a portico here.
I love the colors you chose for the planters and the flowers, they compliment each other. I think you needed that pop of colors. I would like to win the Home Right paint sprayer because I am currently out of work and have been taking in projects for friends and family to try to get a business going. I would be able to turn projects around quicker with this sprayer. Thanks for having the giveaway!
Thanks! I use those most every year as the coral is my favorite. I have more to stick in, but frost is still happening here. Sorry to hear of your troubles, Sheri, but I am praying for your new adventure! I wish I had a sprayer for everyone. 😀
I love the blue as well! With the sprayer, I would paint my patio table. It has an expanded metal top that definitely needs a refresher!
It’s a fun color. Thanks! Ooh…mine does too. Hoping to build a sectional this summer too…birthday gift to self. 😉
I love the color of your planters! What a warm welcoming at your gorgeous front door! Now I want to paint my front door! This has been on my to do list for the past few years. A paint sprayer would make this project so much easier! Thank you for the opportunity to win this giveaway!

I love the blue and with coral flowers your planters will be stunning! We live close to Pittsburgh so our weather is very similar to yours. Yep, ready for sunshine and sandals.
Thanks! I just need the frost to go away so I can fill more flowers in. Soon!
LOVE the blue! The lanterns are a nice accent as well!
Thank you! I love the lanterns lit up a night…so cozy.

I really like the style and color of your new door. The new color on your planters compliments it beautifully and I noticed you painted the trim on your house number sign to match. Your house has very nice curb appeal which will serve you well when that for sale sign goes up (your dream will be realized). *wink* *wink*
tee hee! Here’s hoping. Thank you, Marie. I’m happy to have some place to be. I might change the frame color, tho. Hmmmm….

Love the blue color on the planters and that spray shelter is pretty nifty. Thanks for a chance to win the sprayer. We’re building a house and I’m sure I can use one for decorating after it’s done.
Congrats on the build! You will definitely put the Quick Finish to work. Thanks for the smiles, Judy.
Love your creativity energy!
You’ve made my day, Deb. Thank you!
Amazing what a little paint can do!
Yes, yes, yes! 😀
Love the new front door! And the blue on the planters! And the coral really makes the blue pop!
The newly spray painted planters really made a delightful change to your front entrance! So true that a little paint can make a gorgeous impact!
aww…thanks! They’re a happy sight when we come home.
I too am over due for a front porch up date. If I had a home right sprayer I would paint my garden pots but most of all paint my vintage glider, thanks for the chance!
That’s the spirit, Laurie! 😀
Love the color of the planters and your choice of flowers in a complimentary color is so nice. I am wondering about painting some aged, dirty looking wicker chairs and think that spraying them might be the answer!
OOh…yes, a sprayer is a totally blessing when it comes to wicker. I know! 😀
Love the color on your planters, so many things need painting not sure where I’d start, probably something thrifted I’m updating for my home or repainting my garden frogs.
Thank you. That blue is fun for sure. I have the same kinds list. Have at it, right?

I’d spray a bookshelf!
Love, love, love that color blue! It really dressed up your planters! Heading over to HomeRights page to see if they show how to clean the sprayer. That’s the biggest reason I haven’t used one. Hope it’s. Easy as you say!
Thanks so much! It made them more fun for sure. This one is the easiest to clean by far, but…all of them are easy. Just takes about 10 minutes.

I love this color blue! I see you also tied in the color with new house numbers. I like that little touch!

I adore a light to medium blue against a soft green background. Your planters do not disappoint! Rich navy against a grassy green drives me nuts. I will stop in the street to look. Blues and greens, so yummy. Can you tell I love you new planter? I do! I do!
tee hee. You sound like me. I love bringing nature in and around my home.
Love the blue and coral together. So fresh.
They’ve always been a favorite. I can’t help but grab them each time. 🙂 Thanks!
Great update! And it could not be easier with your sprayer. I have thought about buying a sprayer for years, but just could not bring myself to do it. I wonder if you can also use the sprayer for stain? For fencing or outdoor furniture? I would love to be able to use it here in Palm Springs!
Thank you bunches, Laura. Yes! That rough wood would be a bear with a brush. Yes, it can be used for paint, stain, and poly. See my a table I did here doing just that: https://prodigalpieces.com/upcycled-clock-face-table/ For fencing and outdoor furniture, I might suggest the Super Finish Max Extra as I demoed in this post: https://prodigalpieces.com/how-to-stain-a-fence-the-easy-way/ Feel free to email with questions.
I love the pop of color!
It makes me happy! 😀

I have so many projects I need to get on top of this summer. I have been planning to paint or stain my bedroom set forever and think I would start with that.
Sonja Hansen says
I have decided to eliminate the shade above my kitchen sink and hang some self watering planters with herbs. I am going to place the pots on a painted wooden circles and hang the circles with stainless steel chain. Painting those circles will be first on my painting list and the sprayer would be perfect. I will paint them in a blue very similar to your planters by your fronto dooe. They are so pretty and very eye catching. Thanks.
Yay! That sounds perfect, Sonja. 😀
Mary Loveland says
Nice color for the planters, I think a lot of different flowering plants would look good against that color.
Your new door is gorgeous!
I am thinking the same. Exciting to finally be able to plant! 😀 And…thank you.

Thank you! I’m a sucker for blues…and greens too.

Beautiful makeover on your planters! This color of blue really brightens them up!
Thanks! They just needed to pop a bit as they were blending in before.
Love the new bright, peppy color! I would paint a Cosco kitchen stool I picked up a few years ago.
Yay! It definitely is a happier color. That sounds like the perfect project piece, Sara.

I’m more of a green person … love many shades of green (not all of them). But I have to say I really like that shade of blue!! Also … want to thank you for the giveaway!!
Me too. That’s why my house is green. 😉 My pleasure!
I have some old wooden pieces begging for a makeover. I would practice using the sprayer on those before I branched out.

Hi Larissa, Thanks for the give away! I love seeing you over on MeWe! Superstitious is a very pretty color. May I ask what company makes it?
Thank ya, Marilyn! Yes, glad to be in various places. I can’t remember the exact manufacturer of the color, but I used Glidden paint.
