Update Planters with Paint for Added Curb Appeal

Hormonal weather! I tell ya, first we thought spring was normal. Then, it went all summer on us for over a week. Now, we’re back to frosts and freezes and woolly socks. I’m ready for sandals! Anyhoo, it’s high time I give my stoop a refresh and update planters with some paint. Don’t ya think?

Prodigal Pieces Front Door Before | prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces

Back about 4 years ago I wanted to add curb appeal to our front stoop. I wanted a custom build because the urns I had there were a bit too dressy for my rustic vibe. So, I created these “X” planters and share the FREE step-by-step build plans with you. Now, after that time in full sun and snow all summer and winter, they are looking a little…er…tired. Here’s the original stain finish with our old red door before and my video demonstrating the finish below.

DIY TIME

Like I mentioned, the goal to update planters is pretty simple. They’re not too far gone and I want to keep them that way. I just need to tighten things up and refresh them. This time around, however, I’ll be using paint. If you look up in the before photo, you see we recently replaced our front door. Then, I darkened the stain on my flower boxes we built. So, you know what’s coming, right? DIY domino effect e’ry time.

Since I wanted this project done pretty fast, I whip out my Medium Spray Shelter and my Quick Finish Sprayer. Last summer I changed the rest of my exterior door colors on the rest of the house to match my shed door. I love that blue! It’s called Superstitious. You can see our demo and remodel in this post. This transformation is like night and day! In order to bring that color to the front, I’m painting the planters this lovely color.

SETUP & SPRAY

You know I love my HomeRight sprayers. I have a few of the models for different reasons. This Quick Finish Sprayer is perfect for just that…a quick finish. It suits your smaller projects, is easy to setup, and super fast to clean. I fill up the canister thinning the paint per manufacturer instructions, Then, before starting my project, I adjust the flow on a piece of cardboard.

First, I apply one coat and let it cure. After that, a second coat and I’m done. Literally each coat take 10 minutes, and two cleanups 10 minutes. What could be easier than that? Now, it’s time for my greenhouse therapy. I just love going to the nursery! Hard to not come home with a truck full. Am I right?

THE FINISH

Finally, my efforts to update planters is complete. It was an easy job and I’m so pleased with the results.

I don’t know about you, but I really love planting. However, the best part is seeing the fill in over the summer months. I want them full right away! haha! I still need to add my vines to my window boxes, but that will come soon. It’s all part of the fun for sure.

I have been working on refreshing my front porch this spring. I purchased some new furniture and outdoor rug, all in blue shades. These planters would be the icing on the cake. The Wagner sprayer would be perfect for so many projects. I spray painted a couple of chairs and my fingers and hand were totally numb afterwards! Thanks for all of your giveaways. You always do such good work.

I would be able to turn projects around quicker with this sprayer. Thanks for having the giveaway!

  24. Michelle J. says

    I’d spray a bookshelf!

  25. susan says

Love, love, love that color blue! It really dressed up your planters! Heading over to HomeRights page to see if they show how to clean the sprayer. That’s the biggest reason I haven’t used one. Hope it’s. Easy as you say!

    • Larissa says

Thanks so much! It made them more fun for sure. This one is the easiest to clean by far, but…all of them are easy. Just takes about 10 minutes.

  26. Mario San Diego says

    • Larissa says

My pleasure! They are fun to put together. Congrats on the move!

  28. Marietta Walker says

I adore a light to medium blue against a soft green background. Your planters do not disappoint! Rich navy against a grassy green drives me nuts. I will stop in the street to look. Blues and greens, so yummy. Can you tell I love you new planter? I do! I do!

    • Larissa says

tee hee. You sound like me. I love bringing nature in and around my home.

  29. Shannon says

Love the blue and coral together. So fresh.

    • Larissa says

They’ve always been a favorite. I can’t help but grab them each time. 🙂 Thanks!

  30. Laura says

Great update! And it could not be easier with your sprayer. I have thought about buying a sprayer for years, but just could not bring myself to do it. I wonder if you can also use the sprayer for stain? For fencing or outdoor furniture? I would love to be able to use it here in Palm Springs!

  31. Rachel says

I love the pop of color!

  32. Melissa Storms says

I have so many projects I need to get on top of this summer. I have been planning to paint or stain my bedroom set forever and think I would start with that.

  33. Sonja Hansen says

I have decided to eliminate the shade above my kitchen sink and hang some self watering planters with herbs. I am going to place the pots on a painted wooden circles and hang the circles with stainless steel chain. Painting those circles will be first on my painting list and the sprayer would be perfect. I will paint them in a blue very similar to your planters by your fronto dooe. They are so pretty and very eye catching. Thanks.

  34. Mary Loveland says

Nice color for the planters, I think a lot of different flowering plants would look good against that color.
    Your new door is gorgeous!

    • Larissa says

I am thinking the same. Exciting to finally be able to plant! 😀 And…thank you.

  35. Christine Roppel says

GREAT job! I love that color you chose! I’m loving this HomeRight sprayer!

  42. Michele Meacham says

I’m more of a green person … love many shades of green (not all of them). But I have to say I really like that shade of blue!! Also … want to thank you for the giveaway!!

    • Larissa says

Me too. That’s why my house is green. 😉 My pleasure!

  43. Deb says

I have some old wooden pieces begging for a makeover. I would practice using the sprayer on those before I branched out.

  44. Marilyn Holeman says

Hi Larissa, Thanks for the give away! I love seeing you over on MeWe! Superstitious is a very pretty color. May I ask what company makes it?

    • Larissa says

Thank ya, Marilyn! Yes, glad to be in various places. I can’t remember the exact manufacturer of the color, but I used Glidden paint.

  45. Karen H says

Your front porch looks lovely! And I just might have to make a couple of those planters! Thank you for the plans!
