Bread Box Makeover with Typography

I get skip-happy when my find is not so trashy, but definitely a candidate for a makeover. Would you grab up this bread box?

Before I get started, I just wanted to let you all know that last week my Facebook and Instagram accounts were hacked leaving me at a loss of 9 years of work and without my 100K followers. With that in mind, my trademark attorneys and I are working to see about the next steps as Facebook is doing nothing to help. Thank you for your support!

Back to the fun…I have always found it super fun to lift up the accordion style and peek at what’s inside. Also, they truly bring back childhood memories. Did you or someone in your family have one?

DIY TIME

First, this bread box needs a detailed cleaning. I use a water/vinegar 2:1 ratio to spray it down and wipe it clean. Then, I use an old toothbrush to clean in between those folds. Blucky!

For some reason, there is oodles of ink all over this thing. Thankfully, it comes off easily with a little elbow grease.

Next, I take it out to my workshop and set up my small spray shelter and turn table. Likewise, I prep the bread box for spray paint. This is not just any spray paint, but is basically zinc in a can…woot! I have several blog posts for furniture, planters, door awning, cupola, etc., on how to make a faux aged zinc finish.

NEXT STEPS

Last, after two coats that have time to cure in between, I want to add that little something. First, I add a bit of typography (of course…tee hee). Then, I use a Pewter metallic paint and a cloth to pounce the surface. This gives it that aged metal effect. In addition, you can see the technique in this past dressing table makeover.

However, before I call it quits I also use a dark brown wax to age the paint giving it a sort of grimy feel. Yes, I said grimy. We want old, right??

THE REVEAL

Now not only is my bread box ready for a long kitchen life, it’s stylin’ too. I love it!

Does it look old? It’s definitely more fun than the plain wood. (nothing against plain wood, but inky wood wasn’t havin’ it).  Also, did you notice the old metal knob? Had to pull one out of my stash. Now for the inside…

To my family, this is a rare treat. We don’t eat many grains in our house because we know the modern grain isn’t what it used to be. However, how does one reveal a mini makeover for a bread box without bread? haha. Well…you could turn it into a charging station like I did with this one HERE. Or, even a pretend play grill like I did in this post.

We actually had a metal one inside the drawer of the island my dad built. Kept them safe. haha. Thanks so much, Denise!

I really like the tile backsplash in the background!! So much so that it is the exact same backsplash I have in my kitchen. I’m currently trying to figure out if I want a breadbox or not, right now my husband decided to use a plastic storage bin to hold our bread in. Not very classy ?.

I like the aged look on this, but my kitchen is more modern.

haha! Great minds, eh? I do love that tile. Your husband sounds like mine. I have to look at it all day so I like fun. 😀

Larissa looks at things with fresh eyes, she problem solves creatively, and I love how she uses her "stash" of valuable "junk" in the process.

What attracted me to Prodigal Pieces at first was the business name. What kept me interested is her opening up to share her life with her readers. She shares her beautiful creativity, has tutorials in her blog and takes what was old and makes it new again. I have several of her beautiful pieces decorating my home.
