Do you do a spring cleaning each year? For me, it seems like each month is spring with my family of 8 because I’m forever purging and cleaning. ha! Not complaining, just the truth. If I’m cleaning I know I have loved ones around me. Take for instance my workshop, full of goodies ready to become something new. These doors came off of a buffet that my son completed HERE (you seriously have to see it!). We promised to show you this repurposed cabinet door project. Oh, and we have a WINNER for the Zibra prize package!

You might be wondering what’s wrong, well we’ve found a pest in the wood we are using for our kitchen countertops. No big deal, just treat and move on, but that set us back 3 weeks finding the source, the solution, and waiting on it to arrive. Then our vehicle had issues and when they were supposed to be fixed the dude who repaired it caused more damage. We even had Read more

Apothecary Cabinet Makeover ~ A Trashure Story

I love my husband, JC, with all my heart and then some. He is my best friend and confidant, but he is also my polar opposite in many ways. Like they say, opposites attract, right? He is the reason that this forlorn piece of furniture is my subject for today’s Furniture Fixer Upper fun. Thankfully, I can laugh and have a go at making this into an apothecary cabinet. Stay with me, I’ll explain below. Oh, and be sure to read through to see the furniture makeover goodness from my friends too.

Filing Cabinet Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

JC had one job to do. Mind you he works full-time, is the one who ships everything for me from my shop, furniture and all, and is our main dude in our remodeling adventures. So, I guess he deserves a little slack, but…this happens A LOT.  I asked him to stop by and pick up this “filing cabinet” (as the lady described), but only bring it home if it was solid wood and would hold my files. ahem…does it look like solid wood to you? Entry Storage & Organization DIY Building Plans

Are you always look for extra ways to store things? It seems as though there is always room for improvement in the area of storage in the average home. I like to try to make better use of what I already have too. It can even be as simple as finding new purpose for a spot in our home. When I spied this message center at the thrift store I had no idea that it would lead me to create entry storage.

It was kinda like if you give a mouse a cookie story (much like my patio makeover), except this is the thrifted message center sort of ballooning project. The idea was to show you how to get organized, but then it grew and I’m so happy it did because here is what I did with it… Read more

Do you ever feel like that no matter how hard you try, your good intentions never seem to work out? Here’s my story (and I’m sticking to it): my kids need clothes, right? So, I like to hit garage sales to save money, but it somehow never turns out that way. Why is it they have to stick other things in garage sales that would distract you from intended mission? tsk. Seriously. I was only going to look for clothes and then this coffee table just had to be there.

You see, our other hammock was feasted upon by mice in our shed. It wouldn’t hold a the weight of  a flea. It had been my oldest daughter’s gift and I felt so bad. My kids loved on this thing like none other and it added such fun to our backyard. I decided to surprise them. tee hee hee.

In my opinion, our home doesn’t just exist within four walls, but rather also includes the environment we create around the outside of our home. Today, I want to show you how to easily add to our outdoor decor to make an inviting space with a bit of effort. Since our Themed Furniture Makeover day for this month is all about OUTDOOR, I thought that this sweet little table would be the perfect fit. You’ll get to see what my furniture friends have created for you soon.

Outdoor Table Before Patio Makeover | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

I’ve mentioned before that whenever we receive a piece of furniture for free, I pass it along to one of my kids. They each take turns and can’t wait to see what arrives next. My youngest son, Mr. O., was the recipient of this plant stand-type table from my mother.

It had seen better days and would fall apart if you picked it up wrong, but it had some potential. See the rust? I love me some rust.

Time for Mr. O to take the lead and get this project started.

This isn’t his first furniture makeover, as he did a clock face table before from a table he found in the trash. That’s what I call trashure.

I only had to guide him here and there with using my drill and bits.

We cut new slats from some scrap wood out of my stash using my table saw and miter saw. Once done it was only a matter of assembly and finish work.

He did a dry fit to make sure all was good and sanded smooth with my orbital sander.

We decided to go darker on the color of the wood and used my favorite stain that we’ve also used in several other projects. It’s called Early American by RustOleum. By the way, he had a ventilator on, but I forgot to take a picture of him staining, so we staged this one for a quick fix and forgot the mask. oop!

For a French twist, we added this DecoArt Cafe Paris stencil on top.

To seal it all up, we sprayed with this polyurethane for protection.

Now, doesn’t it look perfect beside our newest addition? Adding little things like this to your outdoor decor doesn’t have to break the bank.

After all the hard work, I needed to take a break. aaahhh… I’m telling you this tufted hammock found at DFOHome is bliss on earth. We were so happy with our outdoor curtains on our patio makeover, that I knew that would have just the thing I was looking for since they have oodles of styles and choices.

Cedar Chest from Trash to Treasure

“It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day the neighborhood…” (while Mr. Rogers sings through my head). That is what tune is I sing when I am out junkin’ during our citywide spring cleanup. Do you blame me? I find all sorts of trashure and when I spied this cedar chest amongst the rubble, I felt so bad for it. I thought this is the perfect candidate for our Trash to Treasure Transformation Tuesday. You can see my fellow bloggers work for this fun day in a bit.
