Painted Side Table with Grain Sack Design

Isn’t it hard to see past the obvious sometimes? I spied this sad little thing in the thrift store and wondered its story. It definitely is damaged and is obviously unwanted. Per my usual, I buy the sorry sight and bring it home for a fun makeover into a painted side table. Time for some DIY elbow grease!

At first glance, there are scratches across the top surface. Also, this piece is made of mixed materials (wood and particle) that has water damage. It most certainly needs some help to make it look new.

DIY TIME

First, I use my sander to take the surface finish off and get rid of the lumps from the water. Once that’s done, I fill in any nicks and dents with wood filler and sand again. Now, I’m ready to add a stain/odor-blocking primer as a base. You can see how I’ve used it for smoke-filled pieces HERE.

Next, I get to start my painting fun after the primer has cured. For this, I’m using my brush with a white acrylic in eggshell finish.

Then, after two layers of white paint cure, I begin to add my grain sack layers using painter’s tape. If you love this effect like I do, you can see how I’ve used it in these past furniture and fabric projects HERE.

Last, I use my grain sack stencil to create even more dimension to my painted side table makeover. Likewise, if you’d like to try this grain sack style, you can see my son’s tutorial in this post. Then, to top it all off, I apply a natural wax to seal it and protect.

Hmmm…. with my lack of imagination, I would probably have painted it black and left it at that. But, after seeing this, I’m thinking stencil with a French design as well!! ? Thanks for all the great ideas!!?

    • Larissa says

Ya know, I almost did black with white or gray stencil. haha. Fun! 😀

What a darling little table. Like the stripe down the center as well as the stencil design. Great job.
Can’t wait to see what you do with them minnow buckets. I still have one up in the shed loft that we have had for years; collecting dust I might add.

Thank ya, girl! Those Queen Anne legs also beg to be French Chic. tee hee. Thank you!

Very cute! How do you decide on what type of paint to use – acrylic verses chalk? I’ve seen you use both.

    • Larissa says

Thanks! I honestly go with what suits the style. In most cases, I use acrylic because even flat paint works just like chalk paint. I also use milk paint which also give different textures. Modern would be a different sheen, etc.

  5. Becky says

I really like the stripes! …both of the end tables in MY living room have them! ?

    • Larissa says

They’re just so fun to add to pieces. Thanks, Marie! 😀
