DIY Apothecary Cabinet

It’s that time again! While you know I will either embrace or erase hearts from the vintage decor I find. Take a peek at this heart cut-out shadow box I brought home. It’s cute… but… this time around those hearts need to go. My vision is a DIY apothecary cabinet – do you see it?

Now, you’ll see their projects in a bit. For now, let’s get this makeover party started, shall we? Before we do that, take a peek at a few past embrace and erased heart makeovers:

FLIP SIDE

First, I’m going to flip this solid wood shelf on its side and take off the hearts.

Notice I’m wearing my biggest down coat with gloves as it’s barely ten degrees outside. brrr… Then, once I have the shell left to work with, I turn to my scrap wood pile and pull out these bits of ½” cabinet-grade plywood from building my son’s custom cornhole boards.

I cut pieces to make boxes and tilt-out bins for each cubby. woot!

After that, I head into warmth to stain and paint my mini builds and then assemble as well using hardware from my stash.

While it may look like that went quickly, it actually took me a couple of hours to complete, but I’m happy with the end result.

TONICS & SUCH

Finally, here is my DIY apothecary cabinet complete with labels and oodles of character. Much better than that 80’s shadow box I first started out with. Am I right?

I just have to say that I often think I was born in the wrong time period. Not only do we need to bring back apothecaries, but also whole eating and health in general. What a change that would be!

As for my project, I’m stoked with the outcome and hope you are too. The bin labels make it decorative as well as functional. Meanwhile those tilt-out bins could hide some goodies too.

What would you stash in there?

Remember, I have nothing against heart cut-outs in some instances but do find them truly dating some useful pieces. What is more, it’s fun to take these cast-off items and create something new. As a matter of fact, I challenge you to try it for yourself. {{fist pump}}

Larissa looks at things with fresh eyes, she problem solves creatively, and I love how she uses her "stash" of valuable "junk" in the process.

What attracted me to Prodigal Pieces at first was the business name. What kept me interested is her opening up to share her life with her readers. She shares her beautiful creativity, has tutorials in her blog and takes what was old and makes it new again. I have several of her beautiful pieces decorating my home.
