There you are shopping a thrift store, and you spy gold… er… #trashure. You move in quickly because the store is filled with shoppers doing the same. You grab and say in your head, “gotcha!” After that, I also notice a thrifted crate that suits my purpose. Now, I’m ready to build with my finds. Are you ready to see what became of these?
At first glance, I’m sure you’re like… oh. haha. But take a look at this handmade crate.
It’s not much to look at initially but just take a peek inside as it holds a memory.
FROM THE HEART
First, from what I gather, this was made from box store pine in recent times because of this familiar label I see left inside.
Then, after that, I notice this message carved into the bottom slats under what seems to have been a plastic liner held in by upholstery tacks.
It reads:
“Mom, a year has passed and nothing is the same. Just know these things… you raised a great man (me). I admire your strength and example.”
sniff. My best guess is someone built this to honor their mother and used it as a planter as there was remnant soil as well.
UPCYCLE TIME
Before I get into it, check out these adjustable stands that originally caught my attention.
I love using these to tier crocks or Boho style planters to add dimension to a room. I bought two and my oldest daughter, Miss C, bought the other two.
For reference, I love, not only upcycling crates, but building them from reclaimed wood too. Here are some past projects:
- Repurposed Wine Crate
- Antique Crate Stand DIY
- DIY Antique Crate Tutorial
- Upcycled Crates for Farmhouse Decor
- DIY Crate Wagon
- Soda Crate Stand
Next part of my thrifted crate upcycling, I remove those upholstery tacks and give it a good cleaning.
After that, I line up the stands underneath and pre-drill countersunk holes to attach from inside the crate. Here it is in dry fit form.
Last, once I have it all set up and ready to go, I apply two coats of paint in this creamy white and keeping the sweet message intact. Notice sleepy Loula keeping an eye on me, and Ivan was in his tent, but snuck out.
STANDING TALL
Finally, although not that it took that long, here is my thrifted crate reaching new heights and offering a stylish storage space for plants, blanket, towels, etc.
Not only does it add style and texture, but just fun to fill up with whatever your heart desire. What would you tuck into it?
Thanks to Miss C for letting me borrow some of her plants for staging as I adore that Swiss cheese plant. Isn’t that fun?
Now that was fun for me and, I hope, inspiring to you. Here’s to being thrifty and willing to try!
If you’d like to make this part of your home story, you can find this available for local purchase in my online store.

That turned out so well!!! Putting it on legs makes a great difference. I love it!!! So useful for so many things! Prayers are with you and may you and your kids have a very, VERY, Merry Christmas and I know 2025 will be the year of Larissa!!! 🎄🤶🥰
I had fun giving it a lift! 😀 Your prayers are coveted for sure and sending them up for you too. Hugs!
When I first saw this crate up on the stands my first thought was imagining adding a hinged lid top, so it could be used for storage and display. Haha, does that make sense? But, I love its finished look, a perfect planter!
Sending prayers of comfort and peace this holiday season!!
Yes! I debated on that but wanted it open to fit larger items too – but great minds! Thanks so much, Jill. God is good.
Larissa, I’m not as handy as you are with building things, but I bet I could do this. It’s a great holder. I’d probably put blankets in it. Good job!!!
Sending you prayers of healing and also for Joy and Harmony.
That’s the spirit, Caye! It’s definitely fun to learn new things like this. Thanks so much.
It would look awesome with some of my “saved” vintage quilts rolled up and stacked in it. It is adorable!
Ooh… I like the way you think, Marietta. 😀
That was fun! I like the added legs as well, and I think it works just fine as a plant stand.
That’s more than likely what I would put in it. Too bad it ended up in a thrift shop when the person built it for his mom.
Plants really bring a home to life, so that would be my use for sure. Agreed.
