Updated Art Deco Chest of Drawers by a Teen

Nothing makes me happier that to share a new project with you. However, when it’s a project that is done by one of my kids, I get beyond excited, even giddy. My proud mama heart takes over and I it amazes me how hard they work to get the job done. Take my oldest daughter’s latest project, an ugly painted beast in the before. Miss C is going to tame this brown beast and show you how it became an updated Art Deco chest of drawers. You go girl!

Many of you know that I have sworn off bringing home awfully painted furniture. I have had my fun messing with them, but apparently my husband keeps forgetting my promise to self, so when I send him out to retrieve project pieces he brings Read more

Antique Dresser Given Time-Worn Love

Little did I know one day that I would be bringing home FOUR pieces of furniture at the same time. You would think that is normal around here as it’s not the first time, but I have been trying to scale back until I can find suitable storage. However, who can blame me when I guy offers antique pieces from a storage unit for an amazing price? This antique dresser was one of them and the subject for my Trash to Treasure post today. Read through to see what my blogger friends have for you too.

Shabby Chic Details

It’s been a while since I’ve done my own furniture makeover since I just recently helped my son and both of my daughters with their furniture makeovers. It’s not like I haven’t been busy or anything. tsk. One piece that I have finished for a custom order is this Art Deco chest of drawers that has gotten a shabby chic detailing. Yup, it’s not a BEEP, but very similar to my Dumpster Diva.

This lovely piece came from a client, Ruby, who allowed me to share the story of her chest of drawers. Back in 1954, Ruby’s parents bought the entire set for her. It had weathered a small flood, and this is the remaining piece left. She used it in her parent’s house until she married, and then her mother continued to use it until her death in 1991. So, in reality, it has been hers for 61 years. Ruby has decided to give it new life to suit her shabby chic love. How fun is that?!

The chest is in great shape, but has a few cosmetic problems, as well as some structural issues – all totally repairable with Read more

Tissue Paper Transformation

Sometimes a break is needed and it’s good to step away for a while from things that tend to consume us. After finally putting our hospital bills behind us, I needed a break from churning out furniture after furniture. After about 3 weeks of not really doing a major makeover, I found it was time. Do you ever take a break like that? A friend of mine was in the process of moving and had a few pieces that belonged to her mother that she thought I might be interested in.  She had a desk and this curio cabinet. I see a tissue paper makeover coming on.

Although it wasn’t much to look at, I thought it had potential. It’s not an antique and is actually a more modern piece made to look old, but still a piece of furniture nonetheless.

It originally had a glass back, but at some point the glass got broken and I decided it was not going back in.  I wanted to take this sad-looking cabinet and give it a feminine makeover. Read more

“The Other” Purple Chair Makeover

Let me introduce you to my other purple lady, the one on the right. She has fantastic curves, tufted design, and itchy, scratchy, indoor/outdoor carpet-like upholstery.  Wait….those things don’t go together, right?

Can I just say that this chair was so uncomfortable that not one of my 6 kids, my husband, or me, wanted to sit on either one of them with thin clothes or bare flesh touching that fabric…ouch! No wonder someone sold them.  It was time for a chair makeover.

This pair had completely different lines and spoke to me in different vibes.  The one on the left looked to be farmhouse girl, while the other just screamed, “Dress me up please!”  You didn’t know furniture can speak did you?  tsk.
I saved the best for last with this pair.  The farmhouse girl got her feedsack makeover last week and caused quite a stir among some folks on Hometalk’s Facebook page where it was featured.  Don’t get me wrong, the majority of people have rave reviews, but boy were there some haters.  And I quote, “Oh no, no, no” or how about, “Oh good Lord.”  Really?
I found that most of those naysayers were older women who must have not had anything to do but criticize.  It was a fun time of banter though.  As one Facebooker said, “I liken it to knowing you’ve reached the top when Weird Al Yankovic makes a song about you.”  I have arrived.

That chair was even featured on Miss Mustard Seed’s blog…eeek!
Back to the curvy lady…  ooh, it was such fun taking off that upholstery.  I have to give credit to the last upholsterer because my hands looked like I had been in a fight with an angry wet cat.  That upholstery was not going to shift! Not to mention my back was speaking volumes as well.  (or could it be I’m getting older…nah)

Even my youngest boy had a blast yanking off that welting.

When he was done, he was huffing and puffing and declared, “I’m bigger now.  I think I’m going to be as strong as Dada.  I think I’m even going to be as strong as Dabio”.  Hahahaha…ever watch Wild Kratts on PBS?  Dabio is a make-fun character of Fabio.  You have to see it.  That kid cracks me up!

Once down to bear bones it was time to dress up this fancy lady.

I’ve always had a thing for linen.  It’s such a soft, natural fiber fabric and all I could envision was linen for this piece.  Mixing it up with a pretty rose fabric just gave it a little more feminine appeal, don’t you think?

Aside from the buttoned up back, my favorite part of this chair is the kidney shaped seat.

 See the coordinating welting?

I seriously wanted this chair for my bedroom, but I already have one…sigh.

How about that carved leg design?  I accented it by highlighting with a light beige color.

Now, every lady has to look good from the backside, so I dressed her up proper.

Shabby Chic Rocking Chair with a Twist

While trying (and I mean trying… or in honest truth, actually secretly adding while trying..ha!) to work through my stash of projects, I finally decided to empty my brain of the plans I had to create a unique piece. Enter in this vintage Bentwood shabby chic rocking chair.

Pretty, isn’t it?  Aaahh…my brain is now able to move on.  I’m happy with how it turned out.

Here’s the before shots: (more like oops, forgot to snap a picture before I sanded and prepped and started to work)

This chair was in excellent shape with only some minor nicks that were easily sanded out, and the caning was firm and intact.

For some reason, the moment I got this chair, I kept seeing a cross-stitch loom in the caning. And, of course, it needed to be filled with some sort of shabby type design. Since I hadn’t done a shabby piece in a while (I’ve been a modern vibe for a bit), I thought now was the perfect time.  Especially because our weather is lacking and I’m suffering from cabin fever!!

So after a couple coats of my favorite color chalk paint on frame and cane topped with a hand-rubbed wax, I grabbed my yarn needle and set to work.

Let me tell you that being 6 months pregnant and trying to embroider a rocking chair is not the easiest thing to do.

Just picture me on my desk chair next to the rocker, half-kinked over trying to reach the back with needle and yarn.  My back and neck were killing me.  But… I honestly didn’t notice too much because I was having fun!

Since the stitched design was happening on the front, I needed to dress up the stitch marks on the back.  See my prego belly?

The backing added to the overall uniqueness of the chair, don’t you?
I must say that even though this chair was available in my shop, (SOLD) I would be perfectly happy to keep it because my kids and I used it for a while before working on it and it is oh so comfortable!  It has the most wonderful rocking gait – long and smooth.
