Outdoor Decor ~ Creating an Inviting Space

Do you know that feeling of complete relaxation…that point that you just don’t want to move or else it will go away? That my friends is how I feel about sinking into my latest treat-to-self family. ahem. Last week I showed you how I’ve been updating our patio decor. This week, take a look at the new beauty that has arrived to my outdoor decor. You don’t know backyard bliss until you have rested in a tufted hammock. Yes, not just any old hammock…a tufted hammock – a veritable mattress on ropes!. I must be dreaming…swoon.

You see, our other hammock was feasted upon by mice in our shed. It wouldn’t hold a the weight of  a flea. It had been my oldest daughter’s gift and I felt so bad. My kids loved on this thing like none other and it added such fun to our backyard. I decided to surprise them. tee hee hee.

Vintage Sideboard Refreshed

Our kitchen remodel is going strong and it’s time to make some changes. One of the pieces in our kitchen is my vintage sideboard. I have had this handsome server for several years and hadn’t had the time to give it a makeover. My personal things always come last. tsk. So, for today’s Themed Furniture Makeover, which the topic is CHOCOLATE, I decided it was high time to get ‘er done.

Since we have 6 kids (and homeschool), our table space is somewhat limited. We have our custom farmhouse table that I recently refinished (you can see it HERE), but at one point I bought a Duncan Phyfe extension table hoping to enlarge our seating capacity. The table was a no-go due to our dining area dimensions, so I sold it. But… I kept the matching sideboard.

Whitewashed (or Limewashed) Wood

There is something to be said when an effect is achieved simply and creates stunning impact. One of the appealing methods for me is creating whitewashed (or limewashed) wood. Today is Themed Furniture Makeover Day and it’s all about Shades of White. I’d say whitewashed (or limewashed) wood is a perfect fit, wouldn’t you? Be sure to see what all of the other ladies have created for you later in the post.

Over the years, I have whitewashed many pieces of furniture and it is still one of my favorite ways to age a piece and create dimension. The subject for my project today is my very own farmhouse dining table. We were gifted our table from my husband’s employer Osborne Wood Products, when we both graduated college. To say I was excited was an understatement. I got to choose the wood, the legs, and the finish…eep! Rough part is that 15 years later , our table has made it through 6 children, but is in need of a makeover. (did I just say 15 YEARS ago I graduated college? wow.) I was so eager to get started that I forgot to take a true “before” picture, but here it is…

Vintage Typography Acme Cedar Chest

I have a fascination for vintage typography and have a blast adding it to the pieces I work on. It was a goal of mine to do something fun on a chest of drawers, but when I found this cedar chest in a thrift store, I knew just what to do with it.

Reclaimed Game Table from Rocking Chair

Today is Themed Furniture Makeover Day, and is one of my favorite times of the month. Can you blame me? One of my passions are redoing furniture, and the fact that I get to do it along with the best in Blogland, just makes it all the more sweet.

Themed Furniture Makeover Day

ANIMAL is the theme for today, and I have to tell you that my project has been in my brain for two years now…yes, TWO YEARS! I acquired a broken down antique Morris rocker when I needed parts for a custom rocking chair I was working on. (Read the full story here to catch you up to speed)

Over the years, I’ve used the springs to create Christmas tree toppers, the rockers to make custom signs, and the arm rests for a fun beachy project. I’ve made use of all the parts except the back rest, spindles, and the base. The back rest will be turned into something functional soon, the spindles I am waiting for the holidays to roll around. Here’s the leftover base:

There’s a piece of the other broken rocker, a remnant slab of first growth reclaimed wood we used to make these custom kitchen shelves, and the cast iron pieces that adjusted the rocker back. Arent’ they cool?

When I turned the leftover base upside down, I saw an animal. The legs looked like a hoofed animal, and what better time to get my rear in gear and do this thing up right than our makeover day? So, here we go…

I start by taking off the pieces that held the rockers on. That is some solid wood, friends!

Art Deco Dressing Table goes Industrial Chic

Today is all about my favorite project of the month – Themed Furniture Makeover Day!! What could be more fun than getting together with a bunch of furniture girls to do what we love? Today’s theme is all about Industrial…I love it. ♥ Normally, I would have done some sort of factory industrial-type build or makeover, but I chose to go a different route, and have a very fun Art Deco piece to show you today.

Rustic Chic Finish ~ Themed Makeover

I think there should be sweet music playing when I write for our Themed Furniture Makeover Day because it is my favorite time each month. Do you blame me? I don’t have local friends and neighbors, even family, who enjoy doing what I do, so having some peeps to share in the goodness is fantastic! Not only that, but they challenge me as well. Be sure to stop by the linkup at the bottom and check out all their hard work. This month’s project was all about RUSTIC furniture. tsk. Now you know that got me excited. Yay! Love me some rustic chic. ♥

A few weeks ago I was on Craigslist (like I’m never on there – right.), and was relisting some of my items. I make a habit of always checking the free section because you just never know. Here is what I saw when I clicked…

Seriously, my jaw hit my desk and I grabbed my phone lightning-fast. (You know, I seriously wish I could see what my face looks like when this stuff happens. I’d laugh my rear off!) Missing a few drawers, casters, and mirrors, but it’s already stripped!!

Story goes like this: Lady tries to strip this set herself and finds out she took on more than she could handle. She damages it beyond repair (in her mind) and lets it sit in a friends’ barn (Man) for over a year. Man asks her what she’d like done with it because he’d like it gone, to which she replies, burn it. {{gasp}} Read more

Antique Stereo Turned Sewing Cabinet

The jury is in…the Themed Furniture Makeover Day has become one of my favorite days of the month. Can you blame me? What better than to get down and dirty with furniture AND do it alongside these fantastic ladies who have the same passion. It’s WIN-WIN!  Today it’s all about being “Distressed” – the furniture that is.

About a year and a half ago, I was driving home down our street and noticed what appeared to be a teeny tiny garage sale on the corner.  It basically was a few pieces of furniture and, of course, that caught my eye.  With kids in tow, I pulled over and got out to take a quick peek.

As it turns out, a young man had recently purchase the house and was decluttering some gorgeous antiques. My eyes first went to this ragged looking sideboard. Price tag: $15

Oodles of damage, door beaten in and missing all sorts of stuff, but in otherwise structurally good standing. Cha-Ching!

It wasn’t until a couple of months ago I was able to give it its rightful makeover. Using my Modern Masters English Brown Metallic Paint and a whole lot of TLC it was given new life. Much better, right?

Vintage Feed Sack Chair {Themed Makeover Day}

Sometimes my projects are in my head and sound good to me, but I never quite know how they’re going to turn out.  It’s sort of fun that way, especially when it all gels together.  Here’s is one of those types of projects. Meet my feed sack chair."Vintage

Want the full story? Let’s go back to the beginning.
A couple of weeks ago, I had my four girls with me and we were headed to pick up our weekly milk supply from a local farmer and then headed on to a flea market.  We were all excited to find treasures that day.

Down the back country road we headed to get our milk, and then I spotted a “Garage Sale” sign.  Uh oh. I don’t stop at every one of these (though I would if I could), but I knew since this was off the beaten path there could possibly be a steal.  When driving with a 6 mo. old baby, you have only a limited amount of non-fuss time and I really didn’t know if I should stop.  It could mean diaper changes, nursing time…you know the routine.  Plus, my girls didn’t want to miss out on the flea market.  What to do, what to do?!
