Thrifted Footstools Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

Okay, so first off I really felt bad for this pair. They had been subject to an upholstery makeover that didn’t really suit their style, but ya know…to each his own. Since they had hung out in the thrift store for a few months, I finally caved and Read more

Upcycled Bookcase Farmers Market

The times that I find most exhilarating is when I have an idea and can’t wait to get it complete. Do you ever do that? I mean, in this instance, I was inspired on first glance of this little cutie at a thrift store. What it would become for sure didn’t hit until I got it home, but there was no doubt in my mind that it would become something new. Yes, I’m quirky, but you’ll understand when you see what I do with my upcycled bookcase. Let the fun begin!

You may be wondering what I see in this thing, but really, it’s all about function. I adore pieces that can go in most any room. In spite of the wear, this one is made solid enough, but just needs Read more

Repurposed Screen Door Chalkboard

Mmm…love me some trashure time. When the second Tuesday of the month rolls around, my blood starts pumping because it’s Trash to Treasure time! {{happy dance}} My fellow rethunk junkers and I get together to share with you a makeover of some sort to get you inspired and thinking. The project I have for you today has been in my brain for over 3 years. So I hope you enjoy how I am creating a repurposed screen door chalkboard from this…

Salvaged Door Before (aka Trashure) | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

A few years back my oldest son, Mr. I, and I were out during city clean-up doing our first jaunt together ever and we came upon a house that had a nice long dresser set out. Obviously, that caught my attention so we stopped and began to load. While loading the man of the house brought out a few arched frames. I had no idea what they were for, but I wanted them.

I was in a stupor and I had to have looked like a linebacker ready to tackle the anyone who tried to get them before me. My son and I Read more

A Little Bit of This & A Little Bit of That

What have you been up to these days?  Spring cleaning, perhaps? Vacation planning? Or maybe you’ve been in the just-make-it-thru-the day mode?

We had a glorious 70 degree day a couple of days ago and I was anxiously working through my stash (rather my heap in my garage!) and enjoying every bit of sunshine until this little bit did a bad thing…
Nasty Drill Bit Injury Keeps Me On My Toes! by www.prodigalpieces.com

…while working on one of my projects.  I had set this booger down about 18″ off the ground and in a split second it was bit-side down 3/4″ into the top of my foot.  Yes, it HURT!!!

What are the chances of the lightest side coming down first AND it completely missing my shoe?  Of course, instead of basking in the sun and working on projects, I had to park it indoors.  BUMMER.

The next day was about 15 degrees and 6-10 inches of snow.  I love the northeast.  ahem.

Aside from all of that, I am in the nesting stage of pregnancy which I’m just referring to as “spring cleaning”, so I have an excuse to grab anything that is causing clutter and give it the boot! (My family is all hiding their stuff so it won’t get nabbed!)

I’ve continued in the remaking of the Morris Rocker parts (see more of the upcycle/repurpose here) and this is my latest repurposed sign creation from this…

Here are some other goodies coming out of my shop:

I don’t know about you, but there is nothing like the sweet, natural fragrance of beeswax and the fulfillment of knowing I’m not polluting my home with paraffins and nasty chemicals as the store-bought kind of candles do.
There are several new items items in shop, like these wonderful vintage pie carriers and…

Here’s a handmade sling shot with holster and felt ball ammo (from a fellow Etsy shop owner found here) – perfect for the littles! (Tutorial for the slingshot here from my Pinterest pin boards).  I just used some webbing & D-rings for the holster, and whip stitched a felted wool sweater sleeve to hold the ammo.

Needless to say (as my friends tell me) the moss never had time to grow under my feet!  Life is too short to spend is whittling away on a pointless activity (like T.V., etc.).  It’s too much fun to create and be active!

Handmade Holidays Gift Ideas & Resources #4 ~ Fun with Felt

Only a few more days until we get to “officially” celebrate the birth of Christ, but why wait?   I love to pray over the people I’ll be gifting to, and, of course, for those I know and love who need a prayer.

Next to wood, my favorite sewing/stitching/crafting medium is felt, particularly wool felt. It’s so scrumptiously soft and is very forgiving.  My focus is mainly for children today (why not, I have 6 of them), with some simple ideas for the young at heart.

Ready for the last week of Handmade Holidays?  Let’s go! (You can find the links to the previous 3 weeks below)

Handmade Holidays: Fun with Felt, Gift Ideas for Kids & Adults by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
One of my all-time favorite craft blogs is Ikatbag. Lorraine is a witty, creative, crafting, sewing nut much like myself. I have used her tutorials over the years to create, but her work has also stimulated me to come up with creations of my own.

Need a cake to celebrate Christ’s birth?  How about a felt one?!

Thanks to ikatbag, she’s got a tutorial all ready for you to create your own garden, including produce.  I just took it up a notch and made it bigger because we have several children who’d love to have a row of their own.
I used two cushions my mother had bought to reupholster her bench, but changed her mind and passed them on to me.  Some hot glue between the 2′ x 2′ square cushions, cut with a hacksaw, glue fabric on to the “rows” and cinch the ends with needle and thread.  I covered my cardboard with fabric, but you could leave it as is.
Once you get your produce, you need a stand to sell it at right?  Again, thank you Lier, for the inspiration.

For the side shelf units, I took boxes that held spinach from Aldi, and wrapped them in wrapping paper. The shelves are cardboard hot-glued to the sides, and the pull-out drawers are the cardboard flats that canned beans come in (also from Aldi) wrapped in white contact paper.  I couldn’t believe they fit in the spinach boxes perfectly!!

Seriously, I thrifted most of the cups and plasticware. The stand is made of cardboard covered in thrifted sheets, so outside of purchasing some wool felt off of Etsy, along with the synthetic felt – the cost was so minimal. All you need is a hot-glue gun and a utility knife. Money set is a Melissa & Doug Play Money Set that we use in our home school frequently.
What better than a sweet shoppe located right next to a produce stand?

Feed Sack Tote Bag ~ reduce, reuse, REFASHION

Oh happy dance over here! I’m super excited to be back at my sewing machine again for my reduce, reuse, REFASHION fun I share this time each month. What’s that, you say? I am aiming to encourage you to reduce waste, reuse what you have on hand, and refashion it into something for yourself, your home, or for others. Today these hand-me-down bits of cloth are going to become a feed sack tote bag.

Antique Dressing Table Set Updated

You can call me crazy or maybe infatuated, but I can’t resist a beautifully crafted piece of furniture. I’m especially drawn to pieces that have been left unloved or so loved that they need help. I call it passion, a true love in seeing restoration come to those who need it most – even people. When this antique dressing table set came up in an ad on my screen, I knew I had to give it some lovin’.
