Upcycled Jar Hangers ~ DIY Decor

Many times I get asked how do I find ways to decorate my home on a budget. Well, the answer is pretty simple…I do it myself. I know not everyone is able to do the same, but if you are able, you should – it’s fun! Take for instance this little pile of goodies. I grabbed a couple of empty pickle jars from my recycling bin, and a few wood scraps from my stash. My goal is to turn them into upcycled jar hangers.

Old Jars and Scrap Wood Before | prodigalpieces.com

One of the things that happens around my house is how I will find scraps tossed in our burn box from JC working on projects that I would NEVER throw out. Big surprise, eh? haha. He recently did an amazing job building our custom kitchen range hood using some hand-carved woodwork I found from an 1800’s home. Those wood scraps above were remnants from his build that caused me to literally eeeked out loud when Read more

Farmhouse Benches with Grain Sack Stripe

When I head to the thrift store and see country blue and geese with hearts, I instantly have a flashback to 1980’s. My mom definitely added that kind of style to her decor at one point. It’s cute, but totally not my style. My last thrifting visit produced this haul and looked like someone cleaned house. For the next few projects I’m going to be transitioning these pieces into a farmhouse state. Today is all about those country blue benches becoming farmhouse benches.

Rustic Farmhouse Wall Art from Flea Market Finds

Who knew such joy can be found in someone else’s junk, right? I mean, I’m all about trashure and potential seen in the left behind. But… I really get excited when I find a piece with potential. (like do a happy dance excited and look around to make sure no one else will take it or steal my idea. hahaha!) I’m a hoot to shop with, in case you didn’t know. Just ask my 6 kids who join me on every adventure. Take a look at this old barn screen because it’s going to be turned into rustic farmhouse wall art. Fun!

Vintage Chest Makeover with Prairie Style

Do you ever find yourself wondering what it was like to live in a certain time period? One era I am sure wondering if I had what it took to survive were the days of prairie life, the 1800’s. Those folks had such determination to make it. While I sit at my desk with a screen full of comfort and ease, I sometimes ache for that simplicity. Today is Trash to Treasure Tuesday and I have a vintage chest makeover that I chose to give a touch of prairie style. Be sure to check out below for the other ladies makeovers.

Vintage Chest Before Makeover | Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

At first glance you may not notice anything wrong with this chest. However, even though I noticed from the listing photo there were issues, the owner even pointed them out to me on delivery. He said it was his aunt’s chest that was a sorry sight before he got it. If you look at the top drawer, you will notice Read more

Feed Sack Footstool ~ Outdated Gone Farmhouse

Each year my city has a spring clean-up (aka. #trashure hunting supreme) Basically, the city divides up into four quadrants for four weeks and this is the time to get rid of anything you want. Fun part is that people know there are going to be pickers and they set out good stuff too. Let me show you what I mean and how I came about turning this ugly duckling into a feed sack footstool.

Ugly Vintage Stool Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

My kids and I headed out to run some errands and while out I needed to stop at the thrift store because I have a desk to refinish that needs a chair. While pulling out of the driveway, I announced that this is the start to our quadrant clean-up and I only allow myself to go junkin’ during that time. Fair is fair, right? However, I wasn’t planning on doing any picking until later in the weekend.

Two seconds after those words came out of my mouth, I spied Read more

Simple Christmas Decor ~ Rustic Farmhouse Style

After our Thanksgiving events each year, it has become our family tradition to decorate for Christmas. It mainly stemmed from the fact that this is the only weekend my husband, JC, gets an extra day off. And I figure since I take it down the day after, why not start a bit early. My main goal is for simple Christmas decor and this quilt I found at a garage sale is the key my whole scheme this year.

Worn out Handmade Quilt becomes Upcycled Christmas Decor | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

When I saw it at a garage sale I got excited. I love old handmade quilts! However, I wasn’t to excited when I saw how worn it was with holes everywhere, even burns. I felt the history it had and bought it anyway knowing I could use it for some other purpose. While my original intent was to make things for my shop, I decided to Read more

Repurposed Candle Sconces from Barn Wood

Mmm…I feel like doing a little junk stash lovin’ today. Do you ever get the itch to create? It sparks exciting times, I tell ya. Especially when it includes junk. aaaahhh yeah. When I found these metal trays all rusty and what not at the thrift store for a quarter, I had to have them. I believe they used to be candle trays, but that didn’t matter to me. I would find them a new purpose. Check out how I turned these cast-offs into some repurposed candle sconces.

To get to my idea to come to fruition, I kept turning them over and those fingers holes looked like the perfect size for candles. How to turn them into one was the next step. I instantly saw this rusty metal being the perfect marriage to some Read more
