You’re strolling along through thrift store items, and you find something so awful that you need to… er… adopt it. That was the case with this thrifted bread box. It’s handmade, so utterly dark, and too big. Let’s do this thing right and give it a much-needed facelift.
Okay, so you know, I’m all about inspiring you. Yes, this is a basic bread box, but what if it’s in the same state as something you currently own. Maybe you’re tired of it or maybe it’s so dated you tuck it in a corner. Now’s the time to make it shine!
First, when it comes to bread boxes, do note that I have a few makeovers under my belt as listed below:
- DIY bread box
- Bread box turned charging station
- Upcycled bread box into toy grill
- Vintage bread box makeover
- Bread box with typography
- Repurposed bread box charging station
MAKEOVER TIME
First, let’s assess what I see with my DIY eye. This thrifted bread box is painted black on top of a finish that means the paint isn’t adhering properly. Also, this weird wood grain plexiglass is only taped on.
Second, when originally built, the bread box is set on a extra wide base and same wide lid. It just looks heavy to me. So, I choose to take it apart in pieces and tackle it that way.
Then, I shorten those pieces a bit to make the base fit inside the box and the lid a little bit smaller
Once cut, I then sand down all the exterior pieces.
Next, after that, I reassemble and begin to finish this project. For the exterior I use a paint to whitewash the raw outside. However, the inside I give a couple coats of white paint.
Meanwhile the paint cures, I set about to make a filler for that open panel with a scrap piece of luan.
BREAD ‘N’ BUTTER
Ya know, you would think after all these years of working on numerous projects that I still wouldn’t be surprised how easily something can be changed. All it took was a bit of changing up and some fresh paint to make this thrifted bread box new.
Isn’t much happier now? While I appreciate the dark color it was, I just want a lighter vibe in my home, at least.
I mean, who wants to put their precious baked goods in a black hole. This is so much better and perfect sizing for a counter.
As always, my goal is to inspire you. Likewise, I also offer my creations in my online store.

A lot better. Of coarse I am an all things white- as far as decor goes anyway. The typography is excellent as usual. We just have a plastic bin on our counter with our bread in it. It looks cheap. Something like this would add some pizazz. I’m also sure I’ve mentioned it before on one of your other bread box makeovers…….🤔

woot! It sure made a difference to the overall feel of it. The other look in size and color just seemed so dated and dirty. I’m glad you like it, Niki! I’ll have to check and see if you did. 😉

Much, much better!! When I saw the first photo of the bread box, I honestly thought it was some mini barbecue grill- it looked that odd to me initially. (Could be time to get my eyes checked, lol!). Anyway, you’ve made it look SOOO much better, it would be darling on any countertop!

haha! I can see that. 😀 Thank you so much, Jill! Funny… because one of my links above is how I turned a bread box into a grill. 😉

Resizing made a huge difference. Lightening it also !!!
It now has a fresh new life. 🙂

I’m glad you think so too. It was just so overwhelming on a counter. Maybe that’s why it was donated? 😉
