For this week, I have decided to focus on some of my favorite rocking chair makeovers, including one in particular.

Vanity Makeovers ~ 16 Different Sets Redone

I’m taking a walk down memory lane today. Won’t you join me? I have always wanted to do a round-up of all the different vanity makeovers that I have worked on over the last three years (time flies when you’re having fun!). Now I can share them with you all in one place.

So let’s step back in time to see all the different sets that have come through my possession and into my shop to new owners.

Shop Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

My very first project EVER, was this little Art Deco waterfall vanity I found at Goodwill for $5. This was before they’ve started to jack up their prices ridiculously for damaged goods. tsk.

16 Amazing Vanity Makeovers from Art Deco to Antique - a must see! by Prodigal Pieces. www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces

Not having really started furniture for sale yet, it sat for a few months before I could tackle it because I was already painting the exterior and interior of our home all by myself. But boy, what a job this little thing was! The veneer was in horrible shape and the entire piece needed sanded down and repaired. It had no mirror, but I found one through Etsy. It arrived busted and FedEx replaced it with a new one. Whew!

This was when I fell in love with my favorite seconds paint aqua color I have used again, and again.

The rest of these won’t be in chronological order, but pretty close, and I’ve tried to find all the various ones I’ve worked on. Crazy to see how my photography and staging have changed.

This next Art Deco beauty I named, My Painted Lady. What a glamorous piece that convinced me paint can do amazing things.

Scored this for $50 and learned so much in repair and detailing.

Dumpster Dresser turned Boho Chic Diva

A couple of weeks ago I shared a freebie garage sale dresser (an Art Deco waterfall piece) turned Volkswagen bus that stole my heart. Meet BEEP.

He’s been featured by Country Living, House Beautiful, and has taken the internet by a storm. In that same post, I shared my other waterfall dresser…my dumpster dresser damsel in distress (say that five times fast!)

A left for trash dumpster dresser gets a makeover taking it from damsel in distress to DIVA. A must see makoever! by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces

This sad piece was found by a good friend of mine next to a dumpster in the middle of winter. Bleak, cold, and sad-looking, isn’t it? My friend asked me if I wanted it, and though she thought I was nuts, I told her yes. I just couldn’t leave it there!

Finally, I’m able to give it the much-needed attention it so desired and the makeover begins. YAY!

Garage Sale Freebie to Volkswagen Bus

Early this past spring, I was on the hunt for furniture for our girls room makeover. They had a mish-mosh of pieces that didn’t coordinate and needed more space. When I spied a local garage sale had a vintage French Provincial set, I hopped on over. (Bedroom makeover coming soon!) Turns out a good friend was helping her family with the sale and showed me this dresser. I instantly knew it would make a fantastic Volkswagen …oh yessss…

This is an Art Deco waterfall chest of drawers. It was marked $5 and she told me I could have it for FREE because it was junk. (Thank you, Julie!) Again, my brain says, “Bring it on!” Am I crazy? Maybe, but life is more fun that way.

So, now I have two Art Deco chest of drawers (or tall boys) awaiting new life and my first pick to work on was the second one.

Art Deco Dressing Table goes Industrial Chic

Today is all about my favorite project of the month – Themed Furniture Makeover Day!! What could be more fun than getting together with a bunch of furniture girls to do what we love? Today’s theme is all about Industrial…I love it. ♥ Normally, I would have done some sort of factory industrial-type build or makeover, but I chose to go a different route, and have a very fun Art Deco piece to show you today.

Enter in this vintage dressing table…

Chest of Drawers with Dolled-up Details

A couple of months ago, I had told you about a treasure box of rusty goodness that I was blessed with by a man who had generously delivered a stash of furniture I had purchased from a garage sale around the corner.  The only reason he thought to bless me with them was because of this lovely highboy chest of drawers below.

Rusty Antique Tackle Box Full of Antique Casters by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com

Okay, yes this is completely gorgeous in its original form.  I mean, just look at the inlays, the design, and the craftsmanship.  Stunning.

However, one of its wooden wheels on the front caster had been broken, leaving the caster empty.  He knew how hard it was to find one to replace it. That tackle box of casters was a major SCORE!!  God is good.
As much as I would have loved to refinish this chest of drawers back to its original glory, there was some irreparable damage. Something had spilled and stained the top, and the side veneer was missing large pieces. So in order to give this lovely lady the true makeover she deserved, I want to go all out to give her a show-stopping, dolled up, look-at-me-now face-lift.
After applying wood filler to the sides, and sanding down wear, I used Kilz as a base coat to hide that top stain, and then finished with a coat of antique white paint using Webster’s chalk paint powder. That gave the dresser a fresh new look.
All I kept thinking was that she needed some jewelry. See those pearl looking details?

Now for the fun part. Because I didn’t really want to hide that fantastic inlaid work with paint, I wanted to draw it out in “jewelry” style.  A girl needs to be glamorous every once in a while, right?  To create the bejeweled effect I used Modern Masters Champagne Metallic paint and Folk Art Pearl White Metallic paint.
I just love to hand paint, almost find therapy in it, and adding that texture to the piece made painting it worthwhile.

I am so pleased with how it came out.  After finishing the process with a hand-rubbed topcoat of natural wax, I just stepped back and sighed.

 Isn’t she lovely?  swoon….

Yet again, I really debated on keeping this one for my little princesses.  They already have furniture, but nothing as glamorous as this gal.

The dresser didn’t last long in my shop, as you can imagine.  Another happy ending for a dresser that was hiding in a garage, for me having the pleasure to glam it up, and for the new owner getting to enjoy it to the full.

Vintage Dressing Table Makeover ~ For the Love of Red

I have to admit that I promised my hubby, my family, AND myself that no more furniture was to enter into my possession until I cleaned out my workshop. BUT…. (there’s always a but, right?) pieces just have a way of finding me and beckon me to purchase them.  Is it my fault they’re feeling unloved?  tsk. Enter in this vintage dressing table…

With a mirror of 42″ diameter, solid wood construction (it was heavy!), and a fab flair, this gorgeous piece wanted a new home. (This one is much like my painted ladyzinc vanity, and industrial vanity)

My client lives in the southern part of the U.S. and wanted a showcase vintage dressing table for her room.  She said red and we did RED!

Confession time:  I am typically not your average electronic device user and put off owning a cell phone f.o.r.e.v.e.r.  BUT… (there’s that but again!) I had to invest in one for my business sake and it has really made things easier.  For instance, I went to purchase the fabric she requested and it wasn’t in stock.  Took a picture of another very similar fabric and sent her the picture.  It was either that fabric or wait 2 weeks to get the table.  She responded in minutes and said, “go ahead!”.  Whew.  Normally, I would have driven a half hour home, corresponded in email, and then headed back to the store. Aaah…so much better.
I love the fabric I found because it adds that added punch of contrast to the vintage dressing table, don’t you think?!

Upholstered Rocking Chair Redo

When I found my first upholstered rocking chair face down, curbside, and broken, I had no idea how popular my rockers would become.

This first one was a gorgeous antique with swan’s head arm rests and intricate carvings.  My husband perfectly remade the back leg, and I upholstered the chair,  making it as good as new.  The original finish is already perfectly distressed and needed nothing.

NEXT

My next rocking chair was from a garage sale where the curves are what beckoned me to bring it home and rescue it from the fabric it was wearing.

How to Upholster a Rocking Chair by Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.comUsing this rocker, I wrote tutorials on how to reupholster & paint a rocking chair.  Check them out if you’d like to know some basics!

This particular rocker sold within a couple of hours of being listed in my shop, and I have had over 20 requests for another.  So, I am constantly looking for another candidate because there are a ton of mommies-to-be that are asking for one.

Do you know how hard it is to find an antique upholstered rocking chair?  If I was looking for a solid wood one, no problem.  The upholstered part is the key. Every mom knows how important a soft, comfy chair is a need to rock that new baby in.

DIY TIME

After getting another request, I went on a hunt and found this beauty on Craigslist.

Art Deco Rocking Chair Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.comThe original fabric was faded and worn, but was gorgeous in its own right with the Art Deco design.  The spindles were the draw for me, and most importantly my client loved them too.

The story behind this rocker is the lady who owned it bought it from an estate sale from a grand home in her neighborhood.  Although she owned several rockers, this one was her favorite because her colicky son would only be calmed by the rocking of this chair.  You see, the rockers are smaller, creating a shorter rock, which soothed the baby like none other.  She even said she would have strapped it to her car and taken it everywhere with her if she could.

He’s in college now and it was time for this chair to belong for a new little one and the mommy-to-be.

REPAIRS

Time for the face lift!

Do you know as soon as I placed my order I received a response from a lady on Freecycle with a rocker that had the exact size springs I needed.  Isn’t that the way it always works?

Oh well. If you’re looking for how to replace coil springs in the seat of a chair, you need to check out the tutorials from Design Sponge on how to construct coil seats.  The seat is better than ever now that its done.

THE REVEAL

Here it is all spiffed up and ready for the new mommy-to-be.
